History
The settlement in Sogod was by the banks of Subangdaku River, and it was a trading post in pre-colonial period. By the time of the conquest, it was made into an encomienda under the Spanish colonial government in the 16th century. It was placed under Maasin in the aftermath of Moro attack in 1754.
The Jesuits reached the town in the early part of the 17th century. It was a mission station established by 1616, and priests from Cabali-an (present-day San Juan) and Maasin would be sent to administer to the spiritual needs of the people. In 1768, the Jesuits were expelled and the Augustinians replaced them.
By the 19th century, the secular clergy of the Diocese of Cebu took over. Sogod and its church belonged to the jurisdiction of Malitbog when it became a town in 1849. By June 10, 1853, Sogod separated from Malitbog and became an independent municipality.
Meanwhile, Sogod Church became a parish by virtue of a Royal Order on May 14, 1866, however it was only on April 8, 1869 that a decree was issued by the Diocese of Cebu.
Archdiocese
The portico is supported by Doric columns, and it in between the front columns is a glass installation of the Blessed Virgin. A line of decorative corbels is found by its roof, on the pediment, and bell towers that flank that entrance. On the upper register of the facade is a blind arch and the alcove in which the patroness is installed. The bell towers have pierced by open and closed arches, and they are crowned by a dome.
