History
The parish of St. Monica in Pavia was erected in 1862. It was headed by Fr. Policarpio Minayo, an Augustinian friar, who initiated the building of the church. Its completion occurred during the time of Fr. Lazaro Ramirez who served between 1895 and 1899.
In the course of its history, it withstood several challenges such as war, earthquake, and natural disasters. In 2017, a renovation was undertaken by the parish community led by Fr. Maurillo P. Silva and funded by the national government through the National Historical Commission of the Philippines at the cost of ten million pesos.
Architecture
The church is quite distinctive for its largely red brick exterior with white trims and engaged columns. Its entrance is recessed by a portico of arches, and they are interspersed by blind occuli with a bas-relief of cross. Both arches and occuli also pierce the front wall, containing glass installation of holy images. In the courtyard are two images of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Monica is August 27.
