History
Augustinian missionaries reached Hamtic in 1581, and so San Jose began as part of the former’s territory during the colonial period. Its settlement was Tubigon and located by the Malandog River where a stone church was also built in 1733 in a place that was known as Maybato Norte. However, Moro pirates attacked and ransacked Hamtic and Maybato.
In 1787, Agustin Sumandi was granted the land of Malaiba by Governor General Carlos Berenguer de Marquina. Its church remained a visita of Hamtic until 1793 when the former was declared a parish with Fr. Manuel Ibanez as first parish priest.
In 1796, Tubigon was renamed into San Jose after its patron saint through a Royal Decree with Buenavista added to its name, denoting “good view.” In 1802, the capital of Antique was moved to San Jose and Sumandi was appointed as the first gobernadorcillo.
The old church was destroyed from a Moro raid, and the Augustinians transferred to the location where the cathedral presently stands. During the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution, the Augustinians left Antique and the Aglipayan schism spread in Antique. In 1906, Mill Hill Fathers took over the church. On March 24, 1962, Antique became a Prelature with Msgr. Cornelio de Wit as Bishop-Prelate.
Pope John Paul II elevated the then Prelature of San Jose de Antique to a Diocese under the Archdiocese of Jaro through a papal bull issued on November 15, 1982, and San Jose de Buenavista Church likewise became a cathedral. Most Reverend Father Raul Quimpo Martinez, DD was first Bishop upon his installment on March 23, 1983.
