History
The name of Buruanga is derived from busuanga, meaning an outburst or eruption, and the latter also happens to be its old name. The change of its name may be due to a clerical error. It was so called for its location that was inundated by the swollen river.
During the colonial period, it was a village of Ibajay. It was organized into a town in 1810, and a church existed during this time as a visita of Ibajay. Its stone church was built in 1894. It was subsequently repaired due to damages wrought by natural disasters, earthquake, and the ravages of World War II.
The parish provides pastoral care in the following: Alegria, Ana-luh, Bagong Bayan, Balusbos, Bel-is, Cabugan, El Progreso, Habana, Katipunan, Langobngob, Masag, Mayapay, Nazareth, Panilongan, Santander, Tabungyan, Tag-osip, Tigum, and Tumansapa.
Architecture
Low arches define the niches of white-brown facade of the church, including its main portal that features a simple portico. On the pediment is a depiction of the Last Supper flanked by bas reliefs. Its bell tower is in the gospel side.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Anthony of Padua is June 13, while the feast of Our Lady of Salvation is May 7.
