History
Bishop James Paul McCloskey, who served the Diocese of Jaro between December 9, 1870 and April 10, 1945 invited the Carmelite nuns based in Hue, Vietnam to serve in the diocese. He sent a letter to Mother Aimee of Mary who was the Prioress in Hue on June 17, 1921. In 1922, the congregation agreed to grant the bishop’s request.
Four French Carmelite nuns (Mother Teresa of Jesus, Sister Mary of Christ, Sister Germaine of Christ, and Sister Gabrielle of the Child Jesus) set sail from Vietnam to Hong Kong, to Manila where they were received by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica College on November 3, 1923, and finally to Iloilo where they were welcomed by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres on November 6, 1923.
On November 9, 1923, the foundation mass was held. Jaro Carmel was canonically founded on November 9, 1927.
In time for its 100th-year anniversary, it was declared a pilgrimage site between November 9, 2022 and November 9, 2024.
