History
The plains of Ogmoc, its old name, were inhabited by people who transferred from nearby settlements and they traded with local and foreign merchants like the Chinese, Javans, and Indonesians.
The Jesuits established a doctrina in Ormoc, one of four such missions including Dulag, Carigara, and Alangalang. It was vulnerable to attacks by Moro pirates that became a visita of Baybay in 1597 and then of Palompon when the latter was organized by the Jesuits.
However, a great Moro raid took place in 1634 when Raja Bungsu, the ruler of the sultanate of Sulu, attacked the settlement and took captives of three hundred townsfolk.
It was taken cared of by the Augustinians beginning in 1768 and then by the diocesan clergy in 1834. Catholic faith in Ormoc was reinvigorated by the secular priests of the Diocese of Cebu on November 13, 1850.
The colonial-era church did not survive World War II after the bomb raid by the American air force in 1944. The church was re-established in 1960.
Architecture
The church is built in a cruciform shape. Over the entrance is an overhang marked with the words, Porta Sancta (Holy Door), and it is flanked by the statues of St. Peter and St. Paul. Above are a cross and the images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary on stained glass. The rest of the facade is lightly adorned by arches, recessed wall surfaces, and arch windows. In the gospel side are the six-bodied bell tower and the chapel for votive candles (dagkutanan).
Celebration
The feast day of Saints Peter and Paul is June 29.
