History
The town was a wilderness that was known to the locals as hunting ground for wild fowls. The hunters use trap called carang, and over time the place was called Carangian.
During colonial times, it was part of the municipality of Bobon. Its population grew as a seaport was built, bringing in ships, goods, and migrants. It also cemented its place as a gateway to the province.
In post-war years, its leaders envisaged that it would become a municipality. In the 1930s, a petition to become a town gained enough momentum that a plebiscite was held. However, the turnout was not favorable and Carangian remained as part of Bobon.
An opportune time came during the administration of President Elpidio Quirino. A group was created led by Representative Eladio T. Balite that advocated for the independence of the town before the authorities. Their cause was given support by Speaker of the House Eugenio Perez. Carangian became a town and renamed San Jose (after Jose Tagros Balite Sr, then mayor of Bonbon) through Executive Order No. 248 signed by President Quirino on July 25, 1949.
The church was established in 1955.
