History
A church was established in Lila in a village located in Macahugan. It was a visita of the parish in Dimiao and on July 6, 1869 it became a parish by virtue of the Superior Approval issued on June 5, 1868. Augustinian Recollects administered the church until 1898.
Another church was built when the town center was transferred in the present location. Made of light materials of tabique, wood, and nipa, it was burned down by the American colonizers who put the town to the torch in 1901. Lila, separated from Dimiao in 1879 as an independent town, was annexed by Loay and Dimiao until it was re-established in 1915.
The construction of the present-day church made of concrete began in 1915 and was completed in 1925 during the administration of Fr. Narciso Maglasang.
Architecture
The facade of the church, painted in white accented by blue and gold coats, consists of two bell towers flanking the entrance. It is a three-story structure with plain horizontal decorative bands marking the levels and it is supported by four fluted columns ending in finials. The lower register is an archway-portico ornamented by a painted pair of scrollwork flanking a circumscribed four-leaf clover. The puerta mayor is an arched door whose tympanum contains an image and on each side are arched windows containing holy figures.
The upper register is an arched niche of the patron with the year, “1925”, written below it. Flanking it are arched windows with openwork. The pediment is semi-circular in shape with a cross at its apex. The belfries are quadrangular pierced by two arches with balustrade on each side. They are roofed by a parapet made up of balustrade and finials.
The church’s interior is splendidly embellished. Its nave and side aisles are archways of fluted piers of beautiful capitals. In similar fashion as European churches, Cebuano artist Raymundo Francia was commissioned and painted the ribbed ceilings and arches with religious imagery.
Celebration
The feast in honor of Nuestra Señora del Rosario is held every October 7th.
