History
The origin of the name of the town is from pinamuohan, translated as one’s own portion or claim of a harvest. An alternative suggestion is kabungahan, from betel palm tree. Sta. Monica Church used to be part of parish of Barili, and it became a separate parish on September 4, 1850 with Fr. Feliciano Fuentes as its first parish priest.
The coral stone church was constructed in 1891.
Architecture
Steps lead up to the Neo-Gothic facade of Pinamungajan Church. Its entrance door is a pointed archway, its lunette made of stained glass. It is flanked by plain pilasters and pointed arch windows of stained glass panes. Pilasters extend to the upper register of the facade but not quite culminating in the cornice that bounds the pediment, they flank a stained glass window.
On the apex of pediment is a Celtic cross. Flanking are huge quadrilateral, three-level bell towers that rise up to three levels and has a red pyramidal roof surrounded by balustrade. In the ground level is a pointed arch door with decorated tympanum, the second level a pair of pointed arch openings, and the next higher level a massive rose window whose lower semi-circle have slit openings.
Celebration
The feast of St. Monica is held every May 4th in a celebration called Pamuhuan or Pinamuohan Festival.
