THEOLDCHURCHES is a website about historic, Christian churches. And contemporary ones too! Contents are focused on church, history, celebration, religious services, heritage status, contact details, mass schedule, and more.
This site once focused only on heritage churches. These are places of worship that are considered to be of great cultural, artistic, architectural, and historic value. They have stood the tests of time and existed for many years, even a hundred years or longer. Several of them have been recognized by the national government as buildings that deserve protection and appreciation, and a select few are part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
There are a number of reasons that this site now contains churches without any regard of their age or heritage status, and why it has evolved to what it is today.
First, this site—if it were to contain information on heritage churches exclusively—would miss including those churches whose presence has made great impact in their communities and shaped local history.
Second, existing resources and blogs about churches found online can be described to belong to two groups. One group deals with history, culture, and architecture, and they can range from the scholarly to the subjective (such as photo blogs). The other is a group of web pages that contains directory and/or information about mass schedule.
It is hoped that you find this website to be a bridge that fills the gap between the two. It is written to serve the purpose of providing a brief, at-a-glance overview of a church. References and details are provided for those who may wish to do further reading or want to look up social media accounts and contact info of the church.
And of course, there is nothing that beats visiting the church in person (visita iglesia) to offer prayers and/or to appreciate its beauty.
Everyone is encouraged to help update the entries contained in this website. Please do not hesitate to reach out to admin@theoldchurches.com.
