History
The settlement in Barbaza was first located in present-day Esparar, and because it was exposed to seaborne pirate attacks it was moved to Igtara by the foot of Mt. Dumangsal. Afterwards, people transferred yet again to settle on a much wider terrain in what is now village of Binanu-an where a church and other structures were erected.
But they moved the pueblo to the banks of Nalupa River near the sea, a location that provided abundant food source. Due to recurring floods caused by the swollen river, it was transferred yet again from Nalupa (which was henceforth called Jinalinan) to Otngol, which was renamed to Barbaza after Governor Enrique Barboza of Antique in 1859.
An early church was built in the plaza, but it was robbed during the Philippine Revolution, razed in 1901, and destroyed from a typhoon in 1903. A makeshift house of worship was constructed on the footprint of an old church in the plaza.
In 1908, Fr. Santiago Cleven of Mill Hill Missionaries arrived in Barbaza and followed by Fr. Santiago Cleven. It was Fr. Jose Henterenber (or Hinterbuber) who built the church in present-location and opened Saint Anthony Parochial School.
Architecture
The church walls are made of thick, slanting walls and buttresses, and its fenestration are arches carved out from these walls. Its red hip roof, which is its imposing feature, is held by inclined supporting posts. A smaller gable roof rises at the rooftop with a glazed glass panes and topped with a cross. The bell tower is erected by the apse wall.
