History
People lived in Patnongon before the colonial period and they built their dwelling place near the river in Catuayan. However, they transferred to a more inland area to the east due to destructive Moro incursions. The new settlement was found at the foot of Mt. Magpungay, and they established too the village in Catmon. From Catmon the present-day pueblo arose as it was moved to the northern part of the river and by which it was known by the name of Binanua-an.
The church in Patnongon was established by Augustinian missionaries in 1761, and St. Augustine was installed as its patron. Patnongon was part of Bugasong in the past and it became an independent municipality in 1762, a year after the church was established.
A colonial-era, stone church was erected by Fr. Manuel Asensio in 1860 and completed by Fr. Eustaquio Heria in 1895. It was damaged during the Philippine Revolution (1896 – 1898). Afterwards during the American period, its care was given to the Mill Hill Fathers of England beginning in 1906. It suffered extensive damages yet again during World War II that it was no longer utilized. By 1962, the convent was converted into St. Augustine’s Academy of Patnongon, Inc.
The old church is a heritage church as declared by the National Historical Institute and a Level II historical marker was installed on February 25, 2008.
Architecture
The new church is erected across the street from the ruins of the old one. It is a low-level, boxy structure that lets the parishioners in through its rectilinear entrance door. Its facade is punctured by square glass windows, and a bell tower is erected in the gospel side.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Augustine is August 28.
