History
The mother parish of Immaculate Conception Church is Calape Church. It became a parish of its own in 1848. A Spanish-era chapel was built in the same year but it was reduced to ashes when American invaders put the town to the torch on February 4, 1899.
Catigbian ceased to exist as a town when it was annexed to Tubigon and later Balilihan, until President Elpidio Quirino re-established the town on June 17, 1949. It was called Jacinto after Gov. Jacinto Borja but was changed to what it is known today by Leopoldo Blanco, Sr. in 1954.
In 2021, the church was restored from the damages an earthquake inflicted on October 15, 2013. Its second patron is San Isidro Labrador.
Architecture
The portico of Catigbian Church, built in the 20th century and considered a post-colonial church, is a colonnade of four columns supporting exterior and interior archways. It occupies the entire facade in terms of width and height, there is no intermediate partition between the ground level and the pediment, except for a moulding band that traverses halfway between the apex of the arches and the cornice of the pediment. Its pediment is unadorned. On the peak of the gable is a pedestal pierced with rose window opening upon which an octagonal belfry stands. The belfry has arch openings and it is capped by a bulbous dome, a cupola, and a cross.
The entrance is a rectilinear doorway with an arch window of stained glass depicting the patron. It is flanked by arch windows of stained glass panels on which holy figures are portrayed and rose windows. They are divided by grooved pilasters.
Celebration
The feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is held every December 8th in a celebration called Katigbawan Festival.
