History
The town of Duero, whose name was inspired from a Spanish river, was organized on November 18, 1862 by virtue of a decree issued by Governor General Rafael Echague.
Its parish meanwhile was founded by the Augustinian Recollects as approved by Bishop Romualdo Jimeno on June 5, 1863 and placed under the patronage of St. Philomena. The Recollects left when the revolution began in 1898 and they returned in 1902. They gave the parish over to the secular clergy in 1937.
When the Philippine-American war broke out, it was used by the American invaders in their military campaigns in the island in 1901.
In 1969, the patroness was replaced with Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.
The church in Duero stands out as one of the few structures in the country erected during the colonial period that is made of wood and it is a foremost example of Spanish wooden architecture. It was the Recollect priest Fr. Lorenzo Hernandez who led the building of the church between 1863 and 1870. The church and the convent were completed in 1874 within the term of Fr. Francisco Castellano. Its cogon roof was replaced with metal sheets in the 19th century.
Heritage
On March 10, 2015, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared the church as a Heritage Church and a Level II historical marker was bestowed.
Architecture
The portico of the church has four impressive fluted posts. Its frieze is decorated by triglyph and plain metope. The main entrance is recessed, and the wall is pierced with both rectangular and curvilinear openings. In its pediment is a radiating symbol of the Holy Trinity. The bell tower is located in the gospel flank, its upper most levels reflect the same window shapes of the facade and it is topped with a pyramidal roof.
Celebration
The feast day of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is celebrated every December 8.
