History
Calabanga may be derived from a trap used by the natives to capture wild animals or as a description of the road connecting the church and pueblo.
Its origin began with the establishment of the mission in Quipayo in 1578. The Franciscan missionaries erected its church as a visita of Quipayo Church.
As the settlement in Calabanga grew, its people signed a petition on April 28, 1749 requesting for its transformation into an independent town. It was approved on July 15, 1749 by Bishop of Nueva Segovia, Bishop Joan de Arechera, of the Commissary of the King. Our Lady of La Porteria Church was also established in the same year.
During the American occupation, Quipayo was absorbed as a village of Calabanga by virtue of Act No. 959 on October 23, 1903.
An early church was built in 1811 but was destroyed in an earthquake in 1811. Another church was raised in 1849, and the present-day church was constructed from 1874 to 1897.
The Philippine Historical Committee declared Calabanga Church as a heritage church and installed a historical marker in 1939.
Architecture
The facade of the church is grand in size, with a barrel-vaulted portico by its entrance. Its facade is sparsely ornamented except for the arch and round fenestration, paired tapering columns, and finials. A lunette is featured in the pediment which also bears the year 1927. At the top of the pediment is a belfry crowned with a dome roof.
Celebration
The feast day of Our Lady of La Porteria is September 8.
