History
The old name of Pilar was Sibala, which was the name of the river that coursed through its territory. Its settlement was populated by the natives who escaped from the gradual spread of foreign rule by the Spanish colonizers in the island in the 16th century. The Spaniards, however, swept through and seized Sibala, bringing its people under colonial control.
Founded by the Augustinians, its church was a visita of Panay Church, then of Aranguel (President Roxas), of Casanayan Church, and Pontevedra.
It was renamed to Pilar after Nuestra Señora del Pilar, its patroness, in the 18th century. Yet when it became a parish on May 19, 1865, its titular was the Most Holy Trinity. According to tradition, a wooden image of the titular washed up on its shores and was recovered by one of the fisher folks. It was thought that it had drifted from a galleon ship sailing from Mexico that was attacked by the British in 1762.
Fr. Faustino Muñoz was assigned as its first parish priest beginning in 1870 and he constructed a church of humble building materials. He would died in the town five years later.
Architecture
The church’s facade is a combination of white trims, deep red, with its pediment and some areas of its bell tower rendered with a stone exterior. It has a boxy appearance, its entrance flanked by rectilinear apertures. The pediment meanwhile is pierced with three rose windows, representing the titular, and topped with a cross. The bell tower has a four-cornered base that gives way to an octagonal belfry.
Celebration
The feast day of the Most Holy Trinity is the first Sunday after Pentecost, and the town celebrates the Tagbu-an Festival. On the other hand, the feast of Nuestra Señora del Pilar (observed since 1983) is every October 12.
