History
Tapaz belonged to the jurisdiction of Dumalag in 1673. People lived in what is now the present-day Daan Banwa. However, it was exposed to recurring flood whenever the river swelled and available resources were not adequate to its inhabitants. Thus, it was moved to the current location.
In 1835, Tapaz was organized into a town yet it remained to be part of Dumalag. Efforts to create an independent parish in 1862 and 1863 resulted to little change. It was in only 1874 that it became a parish as declared by Bishop Mariano Cuartero of Jaro, Iloilo, with with Fr. Jose Aparicio as the first parish priest.
Architecture
The church’s facade is generally embellished by fluted columns, dentil, and arches. On the roof of its portico are piers bearing lamps and the image of the patron, while its entrance is flanked by images of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mother. The pediment contains an oculus bearing the symbol of the Holy Spirit and surmounted by a cylindrical belfry that is capped by a dome roof and cross.
Celebration
The feast of St. Jerome is September 30.
