History
During the Spanish period, Archdiocesan Shrine of San Vicente Ferrer was a visita of the parish of Bantayan. Bogo Church became a parish on May 31, 1850, with Fr. Jaime Micalot appointed by the Bishop of Cebu as its first parish priest. It was on the feast day of the patron, St. Vincent Ferrer, on April 5, 1850 when the first mass was celebrated.
An early church was built in a location near the plaza that was made of humble materials such as hardwood and its thatched roof of cogon grass. Its walls were constructed out of tabique pampango, a woven lattice of wooden slats that was then plastered with a masonry made of lime and sand.
However, it did not survive the fire that struck years later. Instead of rebuilding the place of worship on the same spot, it was transferred to the plaza of the town. Bogo was also organized into a town, with Pedro Aballe as the first cabeza de barangay who served between 1864 and 1869.
The present-day church was constructed after the war. Church-building commenced three days after August 22, 1976, the date its cornerstone was laid and blessed by Msgr. Pedro R. Dean, DD. After works were halted between December 15, 1977 and December 15, 1978, construction began once again and the church was consecrated on May 27, 1981 by Archbishop Julio Cardinal Rosales.
It was declared an archdiocesan shrine in 2006.
Architecture
Steps lead up to the church’s entrance. A portico is supported by Corinthian columns with a roof structure, the outermost columns are twin pairings that terminate in finials on the parapet. On the frieze are the Latin words, “Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus” (Holy, Holy, Holy). The parapet has balustrades, and in the front a niche shaped into a pointed arch.
The entrance is an arcade of three arches with rectilinear Corinthian pilasters. It leads the flock to the vestibule. The puerta mayor is a wide archway flanked by open arch windows. (Balamban Church lacks these windows in its entrance.) The pediment rises above the roof-deck of the portico into half-quatrefoil with a blind rose window.
Bell towers flank the entrance. Each has pilasters in each of the four corners that erupt into finials and is topped with a balustrade and a dome in the middle of its otherwise square-shaped roof. In the ground level are an open arch and rose windows. The quadrilateral belfry occupies the next two levels with balustrade in arch window openings. The second level has a decorative triangular gable.
The nave is extended on either side. Its exterior wall is pierced with an arcade of glass arch windows.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Vincent Ferrer falls on April 5. The town, meanwhile, celebrates the annual Kuyayang Festival every May 27.
