History
The shrine, called Domus Teofilo or House of Teofilo, is erected in honor of late Archbishop Teofilo Camomot who died on September 27, 1988 and whose journey towards sainthood began on October 15, 2010.
It is managed by the Daughters of St. Teresa, the religious congregation that he founded in 1959. The congregation also owns the property on which the shrine stands.
Designed by architect Arnold Saballa, it was built in half a year with the oversight of Fr. Brian Brigoli. It was blessed and opened to the public on March 3, 2017 in time for Camomot’s 103rd birthday anniversary.
It contains museum, galleries of his life and works, and the site of his remains. Previously, his body was interred in a family mausoleum until it was exhumed and transferred to the shrine in 2009. A wax statue containing his remains is in public display and it was entombed on January 4, 2018.
To accommodate pilgrims in the shrine, the St. Teresa de Avila Chapel was built. It broke ground on September 27, 2018 and was blessed on March 3, 2020. It sits on an elevated, two-hectare lot opposite to the shrine.
The chapel has an area of 2,000 square meters and can welcome 1,500 pilgrims. Fr. Brian Brigoli was in charge of its ecclesiastical design, Arnold Saballa its architect (also of the shrine/museum), Bryan Manubag for stone sculpture, and Aguinaldo Pagkatipunan for religious artworks.
Pilgrims visit the shrine for prayers and to seek the late prelate’s intercession. Entrance is free of charge, and donations are accepted.
Architecture
Domus Teofilo and St. Teresa de Avila Chapel share common architectural characteristics such as their contemporary design, their front gable roof that tapers upwards as well as extends forward, and overlapping, multi-layered roofs.
The shrine has a touch of rustic Filipino element with its rectangular windows of capiz shells. Its pediment has brick-tile cladding, a blind arch with the picture of Camomot and of the shrine, and glass installation.
Meanwhile, St. Teresa de Avila Chapel is a cavernous, cruciform hall of open facade. Its huge wooden entrance doors have sculptures of holy figures in them. A flèche rises on the crossing in the rooftop.
Services
Domus Teofilo is open every day from 8:00 until 11:30 in the morning and from 2:00 to 4:30 in the afternoon. It is closed every Saturday at 10:00 to give way for the Eucharistic celebration.
