History
San Pedro Calungsod Chapel was a donation by Henry Sy Sr. and Felicidad Sy to the Archdiocese of Cebu.
It was the first structure completed on SM Seaside Complex, a property owned by SM Prime Holdings Inc. located in Cebu City’s reclaimed area of South Road Properties.
The company’s practice of building a house of worship first on their development projects was previously observed with the construction of the Shrine of Jesus the Way the Truth and the Life in SM Mall of Asia Complex back in 1999.
It also mirrored the Spanish colonial-era custom of coming up with a blueprint of a pueblo (town) designed around a church.
The original plan, an initiative that was led by the company’s vice-president Marissa Fernan and president Hans Sy, was to erect a Marian building referred to as the Shrine of Mary, Mother of God. The change of titular was prompted by the canonization of Pedro Calungsod in 2012.
The church’s design was created by Carlo Arnaiz of Carlo Arnaiz Architects (CAZA). Its construction took ten months to complete at a cost of 160 million pesos.
A substantial portion of its price tag went into raising its ground to make it less prone to flooding and in the process created spots that were transformed into gardens.
It has a total area of 5,001 square meters and a capacity of 800+ people. Aside from a place of worship, it also has an adoration chapel, baptistry, multipurpose hall, and a children’s room.
The chapel was consecrated on November 29, 2012 by Archbishop Jose Palma, a day before the National Thanksgiving Mass dedicated for the saint at the South Road Properties. Fr. Vicente Tupas was installed as its first rector.
On the tenth anniversary of the chapel, a museum of the patron saint containing pieces from his beatification and canonization was opened to the public.
Architecture
The prevailing facet of the chapel is its concrete walls of uniform thickness but of varying width and height, giving rise to a visual of mystery in one perspective and an open vista in another.
Thus, it is also referred to as the “Church of a Hundred Walls.”
According to the architect, each concrete wall was made to mimic Mactan stones on the basis of color and complexion.
Functionally, their placement provides shade and cools the premises. They also become spaces for devotees observing the Stations of the Cross.
At various instances, its appearance was likened to the Stonehenge, stegosaurus (the walls resembling fins), and a jungle of concrete trees.
A portico is located at the entrance and prominently features a lighted cross, and it leads to the main foyer. Its nave comprises two rows of pews.
On its apse wall, the retablo is ornamented with sharp lines and enthroned are a cross, the image of Blessed Mother, and St. Joseph. The statue of the patron is found at the gospel side of the altar.
Celebration
The feast of St. Pedro Calungsod is held every October 21st, the date of his canonization.
