History
The Senior Citizens Park was unveiled by the city government on October 6, 2012. It is located in the downtown area of Cebu City across the city hall executive building and Carbon Market. It has a total space of over 3,700 square meters.
The Sto. Niño Chapel was built right in the middle of the park. Constructed as part of the larger Carbon Modernization Project by Cebu2World, a subsidiary of Megawide, it has a capacity of 150 people on a 300 square-meter area.
The chapel was opened in January of 2022. While it was intended to be a beacon of prosperity of the New Year and in time for Sinulog Festival, it took on a new purpose as a symbol of hope after the widespread devastation by Tyhoon Odette in December 2021.
It was later blessed by Archbishop Jose Palma on Easter Sunday of April 17, 2022.
Architecture
Its overall wave-like design drew inspiration from the crown of centuries-old and much-beloved Sto. Niño de Cebu, from the fluidity in the dance performance in the annual Sinulog Festival, and from the name Cebu which in the mother tongue is called Sugbo that translates to waves. The chapel is round-shaped with undulating six-lobed roof that soars and dips into arcs.
Its architectural characteristics also resemble another Megawide project, the Mactan International Airport Terminal 2.
Its prominent feature is the 30-foot image of Sto. Niño de Cebu made of fiber glass resin installed at the center and atop the roof. It faces the Mactan Channel in the direction of Nuestra Señora de Regla of Lapu-Lapu City, a placement that is said to “allow the Son to pay homage the Mother.”
Celebration
The feast of Sto. Niño de Cebu is every month of January.
