History
Madridejos used to be called “Lawis” in pre-Hispanic times, which is the local word for “peninsula”. According to oral tradition a certain Lazaro Mangubat was the first fisherman to stumble upon the place and became its founder. He fortified it against seaborne invaders and erected a church whose ruins exist presently. In 1889, it was renamed to what it is known today after Bishop Benito Romero of Madridejos, the bishop of Cebu from 1867 to 1885.
Although it was established as a town through the efforts of Fr. Juan Alcoseba, it had to adjoin Bantayan twice due to inadequate financial viability as a separate jurisdiction. It was on June 2, 1917 when it finally seceded and gained its independence.
Madridejos Church was part of Bantayan. It became a parish on March 1, 1928. The present-day church was erected on October 18, 1961.
Architecture
Significant renovations have been carried out in recent years particularly the church’s facade and bell tower. Its portico is made up of three pointed arches supported by four piers of brick-like exterior. The main entrance door is flanked by pointed arched stained glass windows. The rest of the facade is dominated by a pediment of succeeding inclined planes akin to the style of symmetrical roofs resting on a central section arising from the entrance. On it are the channel letters emblazoned, “Immaculate Conception Parish” with an icon of the patron resplendent in white and blue set on a background of mahogany brown. Above the portico is a rose window. The quadrangular bell tower that used to stand in the gospel flank is rebuilt in the epistle side.
Celebration
The feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is held every December 8th and the town celebrates in the annual Isda Festival.
