History
Pilar is one of the municipalities in Ponson Island, one of the islands that Antonio Pigafetta wrote about in his chronicle on Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition in 1521.
St. Francis Xavier Church was for a time part of the parish of Poro until it became a parish on November 9, 1859.
The church that stands today was erected on the spot upon which an old temporary house of worship was built. It is administered by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.
Architecture
A vestibule hemmed by gardens welcomes the lay faithful. Its doorway is a low-rise arch flanked by two lamps. Above is a pediment that contains an arched niche. On either sides of the recessed front wall are a pair of arched windows with glass panes.
The pediment is dissected by two slanting decorative concrete lines that seem to stand in as pilasters into three sections, the middle one containing a quadrangular window. The single-column bell tower is built separate to the church in the gospel side.
Celebration
The feast of St. Francis Xavier is held every December 3. The town celebrates Pamugsay Festival.
Services
The parish office is open from 8:00 in the morning until 12:00 noon, and from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon daily except Sundays
