History
Tabuelan Church used to be part of the parish of Tuburan. It separated when it became a parish in 1940. The present church was constructed in the 1960s. The town was previously a barangay of Tuburan, but its township was established by virtue of Executive Order No. 621 by then President Elpidio Quirino on September 23, 1953. Its secession was precipitated by practicality: the town center of Tuburan was distant.
Architecture
The facade of the church is dominated by angles and straight lines, contrasting features to the decorative curvilinear bands that are found in its belfry erected in the epistle side and walls along the nave. A portico guides the flock to the entrance, it is quadrangular with gable openings on its sides. The entrance is thus similarly shaped, and it is recessed and flanked by pilasters and a patchwork of squared openings. The upper register has a pierced wall whose center has a window formed into a cross. The facade’s midsection is framed by raised concrete wall that culminates in an apex of a lighted cross. Flanking it are pierced windows that follow the outline of its gable. The bell tower is taller than the church. Much of it is dominated by pierced wall decorated by interlinked arches, rose windows, and an uppermost level that contains the tolling bells, its front and rear sides having one arch opening each while its other sides have two and are wider.
In its interiors, the ceiling is ribbed. The church wall has engaged columns of Corinthian tradition, the gospel side features in alternating order a gable entrance with a rose window and arch window containing glass panes while the epistle flank has balustrade in clerestory.
Celebration
The feast of St. John the Baptist is held every June 24 in a celebration called Ani-Anihan Festival.
