History
Talisay comes from the tree that abounds in the area, the town was founded in 1886 with Pedro Labuca as its first town chief. Its church stands beside Talisay City College. By the seafront is the historic landing site of the 401st Division of the US 8th Army during the second world war, an event that signaled the liberation of the province of Cebu from the Japanese occupation.
Sta. Teresa de Avila Church was part of San Nicolas Parish, like Pardo Church. On August 16, 1836, it was declared a parish. Construction of the church started in the same year until its completion in 1848. The church was damaged during World War II and eventually repaired.
The church became a pilgrimage site in 2004 and a year of grace was declared from August 16, 2005 to October 15, 2006. It was officially established as Archdiocesan Shrine during the fiesta celebration in 2007 and pilgrims were granted plenary indulgence when they visited the church on certain days.
Architecture
Talisay Church, made of coral stones and built in the Spanish technique called mamposteria, is described as “Romanesque” or “Graeco-Roman”. It is said that the design was inspired by a church in the Spanish city of Cadiz. Two bell towers are roofed in red-colored dome. Each stands on either side of the entrance. When facing the church, the left tower is decorated with the Hapsburg family emblem of two-headed eagle in a circular relief, while the other tower has an open round window.
Twin Doric columns are erected by the facade above which is a porch that overlooks the courtyard. Two symbols can be found in the porch (on the second level) above the entrance door: St. Therese of Avila’s symbol and on the pediment just above it a triangle radiating beams of light.
A bas-relief inscription can be gleaned on one of its posts, “AD 1837”.

The feast of patroness Saint Teresa of Avila is held October 15 yearly. Religious celebrations coincide with festive activities organized by the city government popularly known as Halad Inasal Festival.
