History
Toledo was established as a town in 1861. Its old name was Hinulawan, alternatively spelled Jinulauan. Toledo Church became a parish on July 8, 1863, and the start of its construction was in 1951.
Architecture
An overhang is found at the church’s facade. It provides shade to those who are about to access the interiors of the church through the main entrance, which is a squat rectilinear door. It makes up the lower part of an arch that dominates the facade, extending above the overhang. Supported by pilasters, it culminates in a niche of the statue of the patron. On the church wall is stained glass window and above the niche is a short vaulted ceiling. The overall arch is flanked by pilasters as well.
The church’s facade is asymmetrical. Although its middle section is flanked by arch windows with curved eaves, the section in the epistle side is contiguous to it with sloping pediment, recessed, and bounded by a pilaster. In contrast, the section in the gospel side is foregrounded, bounded by two pilasters supporting a lintel. Then it rises to the three-level, quadrangular belfry. The belfry is exquisitely ornamented, each level has a general arch encompassing a rose window, two interlinked arches of blind tympanums, and an arcade of three arch openings with decorative balustrade. Each of its four sides side is defined by curvilinear band of concrete in the shape of an arch. The belfry is topped with what seems like a cupola of arched lantern windows whose design is a reflection of the ones found in the lower levels.

The feast of St. John of Sahagun is held every June 12th in a celebration called Hinulawan Festival.
