History
The old name of Banate was Bobog or Bog-og, and it was one of several settlements that existed at the time of conquest. A visita of Dumangas, it was called Banate Viejo.
It was established as a town in 1763, and Fr. Alejandro Arias was assigned to administer its community of believers. Augustinian friar Fr. Bartolome Villa later was assigned to Banate beginning in 1843.
In April 5, 1850, it was declared a parish and Fr. Nicolas Calvo, OSA, served as parish priest beginning in 1854. A stone church was built in 1870, and the town was transferred from Bularan to within its proximity. Several colonial-era religious artefacts were from around this time, including the bells and sacred icons.
However, the church was put to the torch during the Philippine Revolution and the Second World War. It was rebuilt in succeeding years.
Architecture
The church’s front wall consists of stone masonry and concrete. Its portico is supported by columns, and its upper register is where the patron is installed. It can be accessed through a pair of staircases. The arch entrance door is flanked by pairs of embedded columns. A bell tower is built in the gospel side.

The feast day of St. John the Baptist is June 24.
