History
Malibago is the largest barangay of the municipality of Babatngon. It is named after a tree that used to grow wildly in its coastal area. It is uncertain whether Malibago was the seat of colonial authority until it was moved to Babatngon, or that both Malibago and Babatngon were independent jurisdictions.
The church started as part of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Babatngon. It was raised to the status of a mission station through a decree by Archbishop Pero R. Dean on June 2, 2004 and on June 15, 2005, it was elevated to a quasi-parish. On October 13, 2007, it was canonically erected as a parish and installed Fr. Rodolfo Barro as the first parish priest.
Architecture
The low-level place of worship is plain and built from concrete. A ledge over the entrance serves as an overhang and a niche for the patron. Blind pointed arches form lunettes over the rectilinear windows and decorative element on the pediment. A pair of bell towers flank its facade.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Joseph is June 16, and the town celebrates through Sinulog, a street theater that reenacts the war between the Christians and the Moros. The dramatization of the conflict based on faith started in the 1800s.
Curiously, the Moros are anachronistically called as Pulahanes. Historically, the pulahanes are religious freedom fighters that practiced a fusion of Catholicism and indigenous animist culture that rose in various parts of the Philippines beginning in the 19th century. Such movement was opposed to foreign rule by the Spaniards and later by the Americans.
