History
Barugo was a settlement in pre-Hispanic times. The Jesuits who arrived in Carigara spread outward and eventually reached Barugo in 1595. Fr. Mateo Sanchez was installed as its first parish priest in 1612. Fr. Sanchez and other Jesuit missionaries eventually explored and organized other far-flung places such as Dulag, Palo, Malibago, and Samar.
An early settlement was founded in the present-day Tutug-an, but it fell to Moro raids during the colonial era. The site is called Nasunugan, literally one whose place was razed, and its ruins are a proof of the violence and havoc of that time.
In 1768, the Jesuits left their mission after an order of their expulsion and the Augustinians and later the Franciscans took over. In 1833, Barugo was organized into a town under the colonial rule. Several buildings were erected such as a rectory, church, and government edifice. In 1863, Fr. Bernardino Rebolledo supervised the building of a church made of nipa.
At the end of the Spanish era, the parish was given to the diocesan clergy and Fr. Ignacio Mora was appointed as the first secular priest.
Architecture
The entrance of the church is made recessed by a portico with enclosed sides, a wall of stone exterior, and supported by columns with marble-like finish. Above the wooden archway, the lintel bears the words, “Porta Sancta” (Holy Door) and an oculus with stained glass window with a depiction of the patron. The bell tower is attached to the church in the gospel side with similar stone exterior and punctured with arch and round windows.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Joseph is May 19, and the town celebrates the Sanggutan Festival.
