History
Burauen comes from the word burabod (spring) and buraboron (many springs), referring to the presence of a number of natural springs that flow to the great rivers in Leyte such as Daguitan River and Marabong River. Its existence began in pre-historic times, with many artifacts found in Patag, Villa Aurora, Paghudlan, Tambuko, and Armasen.
In 1580, an Agustunian friar Fr. Velasquez explored the settlement and they were followed by the Jesuits. The church was established in 1600.
The original settlement was in Libas, previously called Armasen, but due to river floods they moved to present-day Malabca. There, they were subjected to attacks by Moro pirates that they moved to Laguiwan, then to Tambuko for its fertile lands, and to the present location by the Daguitan river.
When the Jesuits were expelled in 1768, the church was administered by the Augustinians who were assigned by the Bishop of Cebu. In the 1800s, it was taken over by the Franciscans. On June 3, 1804, the parish was dedicated to the invocation of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception through the initiative by Fr. Pedro Gomez.
A colonial-era church was built during the time of Fr. Francisco Lopez, but it did not survive the Second World War. After it was rebuilt, it sustained damages at the height of Typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.
Architecture
The church is Neogothic-inspired. Its pediment erupts into numerous spires interspersed with decorative finials. A steeple rises from the pediment and seemingly pierces the sky. Its facade is a busy affair and richly embellished with pointed arches, trefoils, pilasters, and gablets. Rose windows with elaborate tracery puncture its wall, and the portico runs the entire length of the facade.
Celebration
The feast day of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is December 8.
