History
The town’s original name was Tambuco. It previously belonged to Dulag and then to Dagami. In the 18th century, it was known as Hinulatan which was attributed to the construction of a road connecting Burauen to Dulag. Its settlement grew as the natives led by Francisco Caladcad cleared the wilderness and claimed a stake of the lands. It was around this time that the territory was called Julita.
In 1877, a church was erected by Fr. Manuel Benavente from the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish of Burauen. During the American period, a church was built and upon its footprint is the site of the present-day concrete church.
Julita was once a town during the colonial period but it lost its status for lack of resources. It was once again made into a town during the Japanese occupation but was annexed to Burauen after the war.
Finally, the municipality of Julita was established through Executive Order No. 278 signed by President Elpidio Quirino on October 10, 1949.
The church was established in 1967.
Architecture
The church is a low-level structure with a steep roof. Its facade employs grill-like concrete bands to frame its entrance and decorate the pediment, upon which a cross is installed, and it is flanked with bell towers that rise up to three floors and covered with gable roof. The entryway is in between niches of holy figures.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Roch of Montpellier is August 12, and the town celebrates the Hulatan Festival.
