History
The town of Mahaplag was named after the great river that courses through the land. It is derived from two meanings of the word: mahaplag for destruction and kaplag for success. It refers to how the fate of its people is intertwined with the river. When it swells, the river flood destroys crops and habitats while in fair condition, it is a source of water for the people and enriches the quality of the surrounding soil.
It is thought that the first settlers were the Mangyans. However, it is uncertain how none of their descendants remained. Its population was augmented by people moving from Cebu.
Its church was a visita of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Abuyog.
The formation of the municipality as well as the canonical erection of the parish took place almost within the same time-frame. The church, dedicated to the advocation of St. Michael the Archangel, was made into a parish in 1957.
Meanwhile, President Carlos P. Carlos signed Executive Order No. 308 that created the municipality of Mahaplag by separating from Abuyog on July 21, 1958. Its jurisdiction covered the villages of Hilusig, Cuatro de Agusto, Liberacion, Himamara, Tagaytay, Hemaguimetan, Lower Mahaplag, Upper Mahaplag, Palanogan, Campin, Mabunga, Mahayag, Malinao, Union, Uigis, Mahayahay, Palahongon and Pinamono-an.
By July 22, 1972, Republic Act No. 6529 was enacted without executive approval on July 22, 1972. The law declared Mahaplag as a duly constituted municipality of Leyte, and its seat of government was located in Malinao and San Isidro.
Architecture
The church is built within a gated complex. The main doorway gives way to the vestibule that spans the entire width of the front wall and is pierced with wide arch windows. The pediment tapers and narrows upward, with its wall punctured with glazed windows portraying holy figures. A central concrete surface rises straight up containing the electric loudspeaker and the lighted cross.

The feast day of St. Michael the Archangel is September 29.
