History
Santa Fe previously belonged to the jurisdiction of Palo. Its leaders urged Juan R. Perez, then the representative of the fourth district of Leyte, to file House Bill No. 1918 on May 6, 1948 that called for its creation as a separate town. Amidst opposition to the proposal, it was granted when President Elpidio Quirino signed Executive Order No. 277 on October 10, 1949 and Santa Fe became a municipality.
Throughout history, its Catholic flock attended religious services at the mother parish in Palo. Religious authorities created St. Anne Parish in 1953 and Fr. Doroteo Peñaranda was its first parish priest.
Architecture
This grand church rises to three levels. Its facade is intricately embellished by textured surfaces, Saltire cross, keystones, arches, embedded columns, rose windows, quatrefoils, lunettes, and cartouches.
An inscription on its portico reads, “Sancta Anna, Avia Domini Nostri, Ora Pro Nobis.” (St. Anne, Our Lord’s Forebear, Pray for Us.) It also bears the emblems of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. Upon the lintel of the main doorway are the words, “Monstra te esse matrem” (Show yourself to be our mother), and the entrance is flanked by statues of angels. Its uppermost level are decorated with chalice-like finials and where the patroness is enshrined. The facade is flanked by quadrangular bell towers that are similarly elaborately adorned.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Anne is July 26.
