History
Tunga was formerly a parcel of the municipality of Barugo in 1860. Its name means “half” or “halfway” in the local language, and it may have originated from the river that runs a course that seems to cut its territory into two.
An initiative to declare Tunga as an independent town was pushed in post-war years. An association called Pag-Urosa Han Mga Tungan-on led by Domingo A. Ponferrada spearheaded the campaign and they involved the participation of Atilano R. Cinco, then the representative of Leyte’s 5th district.
On September 24, 1949, Tunga seceded from Barugo and became a separate municipality by virtue of Executive Order No. 266 signed by President Elpidio Quirino.
The church was established on July 4, 1961.
Architecture
The portico occupies the whole width of the church. In the gospel side is the quadrangular bell tower with stone exterior. The facade is almost entirely without decoration, except for the arch stained glass windows and a blind oculus in the pediment.

The feast day of St. Anthony of Padua is August 13.
