History
The church was established by Fr. John Liu and Fr. John Su in the aftermath of a fire that engulfed a portion in Bacolod where there was a Filipino-Chinese community in 1955. Governor Alfredo Montelibano Sr. donated the 5,000-square meter lot for the church’s construction.
The church was founded on May 9, 1957. Built beginning in 1964, it was designed by Architect Eduardo Uychiat. The image of the patroness installed in its altar was sculpted by Maximo Vicente.
It was consecrated on May 9, 1966.
On December 8, 1989, it became a parish.
The church is located within the confines of St. John’s Institute. Under the care of the Lorenzo Ruiz Mission Society between 1987 and 2015, it was closed in 2017 and reopened as a school chapel by virtue of a diocesan decree issued on April 10, 2019. Meanwhile, the parish is transferred to the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
It is considered the “seat of Chinese apostolate in the diocese.”
Architecture
The stark-white church is shaped into a half-circle with dramatic nine-lobed roof structure that spreads out into arches of its facade. Each arch features a pierced wall that surrounds, alternately, a blank wall or stained glass window. Over the entrance are three gable roofs.
Another interesting feature is the dome over the altar by the apse wall, which resembles a crown. Its multi-lobed lantern is built similarly like the facade and fitted with windows that lets in streams of light through narrow arches. It is topped with a cross.
Celebration
The feast of Queen of Peace is every May 31st.
