History
Talisay was called Minuluan in the past and founded in 1788. Inhabited by Malays and aboriginal people between two rivers, they lived in the foothills of mountain ranges of the island.
The coming of the Spaniards signaled the beginning of Christianity in the area. The Augustinian Recollects in the person of Fr. Fernando Cuenca, OAR, arrived in Minuluan in 1848. He also caused the founding of the villages of Concepcion, Dos Hermanas, and San Fernando.
Fr. Cuenca was the parish priest beginning in 1851 and he served for over five decades until he died in 1902. His rectory also served as a hospital. Many people visit the place to recover from illnesses. Minuluan was renamed Talisay and it became a town on September 10, 1850.
Foundations of the stone church was built and completed in the 1920s by Fr. Miguel Garcia. However, a new church was constructed by Fr. Luis Alvarez in 1936 and it was finished by Fr. Santiago Vilda.
The church was consecrated by papal nuncio Msgr. Guglielmo Piani on September 9, 1939.
It was proclaimed a diocesan shrine on February 7, 2014.
It is under the administration of the Augustinian Recollects, the only church they administer in the Diocese of Bacolod.
Architecture
The symmetrical church facade has a portico with posts of Doric capitals. Its front wall is pierced by arches, the largest of which is found above the portico.
Flanking the pediment are twin octagonal belfries. Each is surrounded by cupolas crowned by a cross. The bells installed in 1879 are still in use presently.
Celebration
The feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentino is held every September 10 in a celebration called Minuluan Festival.
Services
On first Saturdays, a dawn procession is held at 5:30 in the morning.
