History
The old name of Amlan was Ayuquitan, and it was established in 1840. It became a town in 1848. The pueblo was transferred from Ayuquitan Viejo (San Jose) to Ayuquitan Nuevo (Poblacion) as the latter had more inhabitants. In the past, people would flee the coastline community during Moro attacks to the mountains for refuge which is called Guilongsoran.
The name of the town was changed to what it is known today by virtue of Republic Act No. 435 on June 7, 1950.
When Bishop Romualdo Jimeno of the then Diocese of Cebu sent a request to Governor-General Narcisco Claveria for more priests to administer the churches in Negros island on April 15, 1848, the Augustinian Recollects acceded.
Amlan church, which began as a visita of Tanjay, was one of the first missions (the other was Siaton) they took over and it was established in 1848. It was built in 1853 and according to historical records, it was burned during the Philippine Revolution.
Architecture
The brick-coral stone church has twin, fluted posts embellished with bas-relief of festoons flank the arch entrance. The upper register of the facade is pierced with round and rectilinear apertures, and contains decorative blind rose and rectangular windows and an arc. The pediment is hemmed by decorative carvings of vines and foliage that all lead to a central emblem.
