History
Bais was organized in 1801 according Fr. Angel Martinez Cuesta, OAR. Its church began as a visita of Tanjay and then later of Manjuyod. It became a parish in April 1873 with Fr. Benigno Jimenez, OAR, as first parish priest.
An early church was built by Fr. Jimenez in 1874, but it did not survive a typhoon that struck in 1874. Church-building began in 1892 within the term of Fr. Guillermo Garcia.
Unfortunately, it was one of the churches that was burned during the Philippine Revolution. Subsequent reconstruction saw the completion of the present-day church in the 20th century.
It landed in national news when a bronze tabernacle was stolen in 2019. The tabernacle was later recovered in a sugarcane field, and reparation acts were offered for the next three days to address the desecration of a sacred object.
Architecture
The church has a contemporary appearance, and its facade is hemmed by twin towers. It overlooks a street and it is punctured by pointed arch, arch, and rectilinear openings. Above the main entrance is a decorative pointed arch molding enclosing a rose window. A niche is found in the lunette that serves as the pediment, and it is topped with a cross.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Nicholas of Tolentino is September 10.
