History
The earliest settlement was at the mouth of Canaway River in what was called Bokobo. Since then, it had been moved several times under various circumstances, from sea-borne pirate attacks, environmental changes, and colonial influence, until it was finally transferred in Poblacion.
Its parish was established by the Augustinian Recollects on April 7, 1848. The first parish priest was Fr. Agustin Olmedillas, OAR, and he was followed by Fr. Tomas Mezquita who oversaw the building of an early church between 1849 and 1852. It did not survive from a typhoon that occurred in 1875. A succeeding church was destroyed during an earthquake in 1925.
The present-day church was built in the second half of the 20th century and it is said to closely resemble the early church built by Fr. Mezquita. Its reconstruction was carried out by Fr. Gregorio Samanes between 1950 and 1958, and he also transferred the entrance from facing the seafront to facing towards inland.
The Recollects turned over the parish to the diocesan clergy in 1960.
Architecture
The white-blue church has a two-story portico. The wall by the recessed entrance extends to two levels, the last one being the belfry upon which the year, “1968” is inscribed. The facade is characterized by pierced wall, carved concrete surfaces, columns, and arch fenestration.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Nicholas of Bari is December 6.
