History
Sibulan was organized into a town in 1837, while its church became a parish under the secular clergy a year later. The Augustinian Recollects took over after the death of its secular priest in 1856, with Fr. Tomas Mezquita, OAR, as the first Recollect priest to lead the parish.
The church made of wooden posts was built by Fr. Jose Cabañas and completed during the time of Fr. Pedro Echevarria. However, the stint of the Recollects was interrupted by the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution as they were expelled in 1898. Yet they returned after the revolution, with Fr. Nemesio Llorente, OAR, becoming the parish priest in 1904.
The colonial-era church survived the Philippine Revolution, but it was reduced into rubble after it was bombed during the Second World War. The present-day church was rebuilt during the term of Fr. Sermin Samanes in 1953.
The Recollects handed the parish over once again to the secular clergy in 1984.
Architecture
The white-red Romanesque church has pilasters dividing its facade into three horizontal sections, and twin decorative columns flank the entrance. Arch openings pierce its facade, along with a rose window just above the main door. The niche of the patron is found three stories above. Its uppermost portion is a belfry where a budded cross is installed.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Anthony of Padua is June 13.
