History
The original settlement of Catubig was situated in Binongto-an (Old Town) along the banks of the river. In the 18th century, it was transferred to the present site of Cagninipa because it was vulnerable to harassment, looting, and killing spree by Moro pirates.
Binongto-an was re-settled and its population boomed in the 19th century. It was made into a pueblo on July 29, 1849 and its name was changed to Las Navas. During the American period, it might have been annexed back to Catubig.
The town was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 238 that was signed by President Elpidio Quirino on July 8, 1949. The order was made upon the recommendation of the Secretary of the Interior.
Its lands were formerly of Catubig such as Las Navas, Bukid, Balugo, Geraedo, Inabetenan, Rebong, Camalangday, Caglibas, Matelarag, Cutoto-ogan, Hangi, Bolao, Tagabiran, San Miguel, Del Pilar, Dapdap, Sagod, Cayo, Lomalaug, Tagporo, Camanewan, Lonoy, Geguinta, Bugtosan, Kerjat, Mabini, Rizal, Taylor, Paco, Victory, Poponton, and Avelino.
Architecture
This beautiful church employs neoclassical elements that make it stand out in the town. The portico is supported with pairs of fluted columns of composite capital and it is decorated with two segments of rows of overlapping dentil, creating a densely embellished transition. The same can be found in the upper register, which then culminate with statues of angels blowing trumpets and a belfry of two domes and a cross.
The facade also features the same richness of ornamentation. The arch entrance door is flanked with paired fluted pilasters of composite capital standing sharing the same plinth with high-relief festoon and side entrances. Festoons are also found decorating the upper level below the shallow niches of holy figures. Elsewhere, the rooftop is decorated with vases.
Celebration
The feast day of Our Lady of the Nativity is September 8.
