History
The name of the town means Jia (place for preparing) and bong (sound of canon), and its earliest settlement was in Horon which is the present-day Barangay Jia-an. Attacks by the Moro raiders prompted the natives to move to Casandig, the present seat of the government of the town, and so-named after the river.
It is probable that it was organized into a town in the 19th century as there was a gobernadorcillo installed as early as 1814. It became a pueblo on July 23, 1864. It was however reduced to a barrio of Catbalogan by virtue of the passage of Act No. 960 on October 23, 1903. Its status as a municipality was reinstated pursuant to Republic Act No. 269 on June 15, 1948.
The church of Jiabong started as a visita of Paranas. It became an independent parish on September 1, 1882. Its first parish priest was Fray Manuel del Olmo who led the building of the mamposteria church. THe convent was built by Fray Felix Cencerrado in 1887.
Architecture
The white-beige church has a simple overhang above its arch doorway. Its front wall is pierced with arch openings and embellished with molding and dentil. The patron is above the entryway before the oculus. Its pediment consists of a lunette. The bell tower is in the epistle side.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Paschal Baylon is May 17 and the town celebrates the Tahong Festival.
