History
Enrique Villanueva used to be called Talingting after a fish or the sea birds that prey on them. It was then part of the town of Larena.
When it became a separate town in 1925, its name was changed after a governor of Negros Oriental. Thus its mother parish was St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Larena.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church was made into a parish in 1953.
Architecture
The facade of the modern church is an interplay of lines, gradation, and texture. Doric columns are found in its portico whose own pediment is hollow and it is covered by red tiled roof. The church’s entrance is flanked by stone brick decor.
Part of the church’s pediment is recessed and adorned with wooden slats and rhomboid windows. Its nave walls are pierced by arched doors and stained glass windows.
On the apse wall of marble is the altar that contains a series of pointed arch decors flanking a cross. The bell tower, which is made of three pillars with a series of staircases, is erected in the epistle side.
Celebration
The feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is held every July 16th in a celebration called Pamukad Festival.
