History
Hinundayan was part of Abuyog, Leyte in the 18th century, and its church was founded and built by the Jesuit missionaries. Yet seaborne attacks by Moro pirates resulted to devastation and pillage of the settlement as well as the church that people moved to Ylihan between 1752 and 1754. They returned only after the Moros left and peace was restored
It was organized into a town on March 21, 1876. However, it became a village of Hinunangan due to unrest during the American period through Act No. 986 enacted on November 7, 1903. It regained its municipal status by virtue of Executive Order No. 59 on July 31, 1909.
Its church became a parish on May 9, 1885. Fr. Manuel Concuera was the first parish priest.
Architecture
The front wall of the church employs arches in its fenestration and doorway, as well as decorative object as seen from the blind arches on the wall flanking the entrance upon which are images of holy figures. In the outer wall in the epistle side is the belfry, while the other ends abruptly and is installed with an angel statue. Angels are also found by the pediment, on which a blind rose window is made that contains the bust of Jesus Christ amidst blue field of clouds.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Joseph is June 5.
